DIY PC. Yay or Nay?

For months, I have been agonising over whether to get a DIY PC. I have spent hours upon hours researching on the various parts and relearning all that I knew about CPUs, PSUs, and all the latest technological advancements in the world of graphics cards and motherboards. It was an uphill climb. The last time I did a DIY PC was years ago and technology has since advanced so fast that what I learned back then was largely irrelevant today. But one thing remained. When doing a DIY PC, the sheer number of choices arrayed in front of you paralyses you. The possibilities are endless. The only limitation is how deep your pocket it.

It is now very possible to get DIY PC to fit almost any need and budget. That is why I find it really tough to justify whether, 1: I should get one in the first place and 2: What would I use it for? Question 2 is obvious. To play games. But upon deeper reflection, do I really want to spend a thousand bucks or more so that I can play games? There are great games out there, but are they used just for that? And how much am I willing to spend to get a decent gaming rig? What is the best value proposition with regards to certain builds?

So many questions, and yet I am no where close to justifying forking out money to get one. Am I getting on just for the sake of getting one, like keeping up with the Joneses? Will it just become another unused piece of device laying around in my room? Do I really want to build a PC to mimic what my PS4 can currently do? And how often to I really play games anyway? Those are hard questions that really made me hesitant to get one. I guess only time will tell.
