The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

I went to Orchard on Monday this week, to get myself a copy of Maroon 5’s latest album at HMV. After shopping around for a bit, i went to take a peek at Cineleisure’s Nike Shop, to look for some sports accessories when i came upon a surprising advertisement poster throughout the entire length of the mall’s pillar. Cineleisure and its flagship tenant, Cathay cinemas have somehow dominated the ad space of nearly the entire building. And with the summer blockbuster movies heating up, its not surprising that you will see entire walls full of different movie posters. But this one is different.

Apparently, this award winning anime movie, “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” is coming to Singapore! Ive heard about this movie, but never really paid much attention to it. So what is it all about?

“Makoto Konno is a teenage school girl who spends most of her time playing with Chiaki and Kosuke. Makoto’s relationship changes when she gains the gift to slip back into time and retrace her steps because of a certain turn of events. However, once she learns the way to make use of the ability, she uses it to satisfy her day-to-day desires and discontent of everyday life — with unhappy results.”

Produced by Madhouse studios, this movie promises to be a visual treat with detailed settings and colourful sceneries, that could rival western animation production studios. Though i havent actually watch the movie yet, you can look at some of the screenies and impressions of the movie right here.

Anime fans in Singapore would be delighted that such a rare treat is presented before us. Though not successful commercially as compared to other anime movies especially from Studio Ghibli and those of Miyazaki’s works, this film has its share of awards to make a worthwhile trip to check it out. This film has been awarded “Animation of the Year” prize in the Japan Academy Prize as well as “Animation Grand Award” in the Mainichi Film Awards.

The release date of this movie in Singapore is slated for 14th June, which to my delight is a day before my “Play! Symphony Concert.”
