I started learning how to play Magic The Gathering late last year and made a post in December about how obsessed I have become obsessed with the trading card game. Five months in and I am still obsessed about it. I have probably spent thousands of dollars on cards and there seems to be no stopping. It has totally taken over me for the better half of this year.
So far, I have fully embraced the Commander format of MTG. Since then, I have built close to a dozen decks, some upgraded from a pre-con deck released by WoTC, some fully constructed from scratch. The deckbuilding process itself was surprisingly satisfying. Just seeing it fully formed after spending hours and hours on it, developing a cohesive strategy around the commander you have chosen and selecting cards that best fit the strategy you developed is extremely engaging. I have spent almost all my free time reading the cards I discovered and forming decks using Moxfield, a platform to build and tinker with MTG decks I developed. So much so, that I have completely disregarded all other hobbies like photography, reading and even watching TV shows.
It’s amazing how back in December when I was so new to the game I bought Jumpstart booster as an entry point to the game. Even when I started playing commander, I relied heavily on just the precon decks WoTC released alongside the standard sets. And now, I can build competent commander decks from scratch, buy singles from online marketplaces and confidently play them.
I went from this:

To this:

From left to right, top to bottom in their boulder cases: (click on the image for hi-res photo)
Yuma, Proud Protector
Ghyrson Starn. Kelermorph (Fun spellslinger deck, easy to pick up for players)
Riku of Many Paths
Odric, Lunarch Mashal (Newly created, first mono-coloured commander)
Pantlaza, Sun-Favored (First precon deck that I upgraded)
Sidar Jabari of Zhalfir
Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver
Voja, Jaws of the Conclave (First commander deck built from scratch)
Carmen, Cruel Skymarcher
Hakbal of the Surging Soul
Lord of the Nazgul
Magus Lucea Kane (My go-to deck for LGS nights)
Morska, Undersea Sleuth
The Wise Mothman (Saltiest deck)
So far, Hakbal and Carmen are still in the pre-con state. I have plans to upgrade them in the future.
The ones that are not in the deck but displayed are the ones I am planning to build in the near future.
