I had a pleasant afternoon today at NTU, School of Biological Sciences. Ive learnt and seen quite a lot regarding the school, and after today, I’m very confident that ive made the correct decision in choosing NTU. (Not like ive got a choice in the first place)
My parents were with me while we head down to the school. I registered and the friendly student mentors were quick to respond and get me prep and ready for the first highlight of the afternoon, which is a series of presentations made by various professors about the school itself. Some of the presentations ive already heard, since the NTU exhibition at Suntec City a month or so back.
The talk consisted of the performance of the school, what the school has to offer, the career prospective when one gets into the course and so on. I was quite impressed.
Then the counseling session began. Every student who were present for the talk were assigned to one professor, so it was very private and personal. During this session, you can ask any questions regarding anything school related. You can even voice your concerns or satisfy your curiosity about the course which were not touched upon during the talk. We didnt ask that many questions. Overall im deeply satisfied and ive no concerns whatsoever.
Then the tour began. We toured the various parts of the campus, on different levels, the classrooms, the student resource rooms, teaching labs, research labs and so on. I like the teaching labs. They are really really big, and can fit a lot of students. Lots of state of the art scientific equipments were introduced and i must say that the school is really well funded to begin with. Im sure i would have no problem acquiring resources for my study or future research.
All in all, i think its an exciting school to be in. Lots of opportunities for the students, in almost all aspects and the elective modules are really interesting and flexible in your choosing. I hope that the experience would be as i would expect once i start schooling there. One factor that really strikes me is that it has this research environment feel to that school and i really liked it. It gives the students a very good environment to experience what research field is like. The professors are really friendly and it makes you feel not like a student professor relationship, but rather makes you feel that they are your colleagues, which is important because as you work with your professor, not having the feeling of heirachy makes it more conducive to learn from them better.
On a side note:
While touring the teaching labs, there were various apparatus and kits on the table and we were encourage to pick it up and take a look. I was looking at a kit where they had restriction enzyme EcoRI, at first glance there were various buffers in tiny eppendorfs so i thought it must be a kit containing the restriction enzyme for use to cut certain sections of a DNA. I wasnt really paying much attention at what it really was but then the professor approached me and asked me if i knew what it was on the table. I said yeah kinda, and told him that EcoRI was familiar to me and blurted out that it was a restriction enzyme, then went on to say what it was used for and such. He was impressed that i knew about it and i was soo happy. Hehehe!
