Ever since I started using my new Oppo Find N5 foldable phone, I decided to explore the world of mobile games. I wanted a game that is easy to play on a mobile device, visually appealing, especially on a foldable phone when in an unfolded state. Thus came AFK Journey.
AFK Journey is a gacha game. But it is more than that. The art, the visuals, even the story is compelling. 2 months in, I am fully invested in the game. I have spent some money to support the game, but nothing too excessive. This game features gacha elements, as you must pull and collect characters to improve their stats over time, allowing you to progress through the game and perform competitively, especially in PvP events.
I also like the fact that this game has seasonal content, and that every new season features a whole new campaign story and areas to explore. Best of all, it is fully voiced! The voice acting is pretty good, but some of the characters falls flat. I didn’t have much expectations to begin with, coming from a mobile game, but the quality of the story, the art, and the gameplay blew me away. Sure, this is considered an ‘idle’ game, and it may not be for everyone, but as a mobile game that does not require your full attention while playing, this is the perfect game for me during my daily commute.
AFK Journey is highly refreshing. It is very different from other gacha games featuring cute anime characters like Genshin Impact or Waifu characters with questionable costumes like Nikke. I have never been attracted to such character designs. Sure, some of them are beautifully rendered in game, and I am sure a lot of effort has been put to bring those digital characters to life, but AFK Journey is inspired by a ‘storybook’ style art and it does not emphasize too much on certain ‘assets’ in a character (if you know what I mean).
So with this game, I am fully utilizing my new Oppo Find N5 foldable phone, as AFK Journey looks absolutely stunning!
