Second Day

Second Day

Second day we made on time as well. It wasn’t raining, but its been getting colder every day. A cold front is in full effect right now and as of Wednesday, the minimum temperature will be at 5 degress Celsius. Now thaaaat is cold, and its usually very very cold in the mornings and evenings, during our commuting hours. So getting from place to place has been really coldstruck. Even if its not cold, the strong windy conditions in Perth right now is enough to stop you on your tracks. This week has been unusually cold and we didn’t expect to be colder than what it used to be when we got here. We were under the impression that the climate might be gradually warmer as the days progresses when spring wanes and summer arrives. But it’s the opposite in fact. If you want to imagine how cold it is, just imagine our school’s cold room in level 5, in addition to strong wind blowing at your face.

I think we are getting used to the routine now. Waking up at 6.30am has been the norm. We can actually wake up at 7.00am, since we usually arrive like 10 to 15 minutes early. But we rather not take our chances because, again, the bus follows a strict schedule and missing a bus, can mean being late.

As for punctuality, I think the faculty isn’t that strict on us. There are no hard and fast rules of what time to report everyday or what time your lunch is. You can be late 20 or 30 minutes and its fine, because most of the people there also gradually come after 9am. But we rather not put a bad image on us and on our school, so we safely come at 9am on time. Furthermore, the tasks given to us are quite challenging and Im kinda motivated to push myself and see what im capable of. Also id like to see for myself if research is my kinda thing. Might be better because maybe at the end of the 3 months, we might have a good track record. As for lunch time, its usually 12pm onwards. Yesterday we went to lunch at close to 1am. Today was almost 3pm. That’s because there were a lot of things to do in the lab.

Today in the lab, we were supposed to continue to prepare the reagents for the assay. As we finished preparing, we started doing our assays, and my results, the standard curve is a pretty good start after all. First time doing it and I think my results were a good start. As I mentioned earlier, the experiments demand accuracy and precision in preparing the reagents. Though my results were really good (in fact best ive done so far in all my NYP practicals) its still not good enough to be credible. So right now, I need to refine my techniques, and see where my sources of errors are and possible areas of improvements.

The building im working in. Its a really new building and very very high tech. On the first floor (cant see here), They have a nuclear magnetic resonance machine. WOW!

Thier university library. Apparent that is not thier entire library. Most of the faculties there have thier own dedicated building for thier own respective libraries. Like physics faculty has thier own library full of book related to physics and etc.

Interior of the building. They have a big double helix in the back of the stairs. Natural light comes into the building, giving it a soft and really quite ambience to the whole atmosphere inside.

This was taken on the second day. And im already in full swing, preparing stuff for my experiments.
